Job Overview

Responsible for performing the technical tasks involved with the storage, distribution, packaging and labeling of drugs. Assists pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, maintaining patient records, and completing required documentation of work. Works under the direct supervision of the pharmacist, must have an excellent working knowledge of drug names, dosages, dosage forms and the procedures for the preparation of dosage forms.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions Accurately fills and delivers medications, floor stock, automated drug dispensing machines, exchange carts, emergency trays, or other drug distribution systems. Demonstrates knowledge and use of various computer systems and delivery, exchange, and pick-up procedures involving the drug distribution process. Fills Pyxis and patient care areas controlled substances stock. Understands and adheres to policies and procedures for controlled substances handling, waste, and accountability. Performs inventory of assigned work area and alert pharmacy buyer with entry in stock book of items needed for order. Reviews stock periodically for outdated medications with removal of outdated stock as required. Accurately repackages bulk medication in unit of use packages following departmental procedure. Labels medications in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements. Performs necessary calculations to prepare and package medications. Participates with inventory management and notifies pharmacy buyer or pharmacy manager of stock-outs or other inventory issues. Prepares intravenous admixtures, chemotherapy, or other sterile preparations under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, utilizing aseptic technique according to USP 797 standards. Maintains adherence to IV Room cleaning procedures and medication documentation requirements. Accurately performs calculations required for dose preparation and handling. Completes all monthly medication storage area inspections and checks for and removes/replaces expired or soon to expire stock as per established procedures. Accurately completes all data collection maintaining logs, records, and other required documentation. Generates reports, pick lists, and labels as required. Participates with the education, training, and orientation of students, pharmacy residents, and new employees. Prepares C.P.R. trays and approved medication kits to ensure that all required medications are present and in the proper quantity, review of all items for outdated drugs, securing and dating of the contents after the contents are checked and signed off by a pharmacist. Answers the telephone directing calls to the appropriate personnel. Answers requests at the window and makes STAT deliveries to patient care areas when requested. Meets all required competencies for department, unit and/or hospital. OR Responsibilities Maintains and replenishes floor stock medications (manual and Pyxis) for the OR/Anesthesia areas. Performs returns and outdates to maintain cleanliness and order of medication work areas. Works in conjunction with Pyxis Coordinator to monitor and maintains Pyxis equipment in OR and Anesthesia areas. Ability to repackage unit dose medications utilizing the automated unit dose packages, must have working knowledge of the operation of packing machine, to perform minor corrective maintenance (free jams etc.) and ability to accurately type labels for the unit dose medications. Researches and assists OR/Anesthesia staff with medication discrepancy reporting. Insures proper documentation that meets regulatory and legal compliance. Performs daily controlled substances inventory with OR/Anesthesia staff member. Fills Pyxis and nursing unit controlled substances requisitions and Outpatient controlled substances prescriptions when required. Knowledge and skills required for daily controlled substances inventory control. Understands and adheres to policies and procedures for controlled substances waste and accountability. Provides reports and data surveillance to assist with Pyxis controlled substances discrepancies. Reports discrepancies to Pharmacy Manager or designee. Prepares I.V. admixture solutions utilizing proper aseptic (sterile) technique. Must have a working knowledge of the operation of I.V. hoods and all procedures that could compromise sterility. Perform routine maintenance on the I.V. hoods to include daily cleaning and disinfecting, periodic (monthly) replacements of air filters microbiologic monitoring of hood operation (to include testing of I.V. solutions and environmental testing when appropriate. Assist the pharmacist with preparing, labeling, and delivery of medication requests for the OR/Anesthesia areas. Continuously looks to improve the process of medication preparation and delivery. Assists OR/Anesthesia staff with meeting regulatory compliance (DNV, NJ Board Division of Consumer Affairs, DEA, etc.) standards of documentation and storage of medications and controlled substances. Performs audits and inspections to confirm compliance. Responsible for performing all other duties as assigned. Special Projects

Qualifications

Work requires a High School diploma or equivalent, Associate's degree preferred, hospital pharmacy experience preferred. Certification by an organization recognized by the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy required, new hires have one year from date of hire to become certified. Registration by the Board of Pharmacy as a Registered Pharmacy Technician required. Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified time periods. Ability to handle and adapt to frequent directives, interruptions, and changes in workload and work schedule.
