 Job Overview

 

Responsible for drawing intravenous and capillary blood samples from infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients in both in-patient and out-patients settings. Performs electrocardiograms on infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients. Responsible for therapeutic phlebotomy from infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients in an out-patient setting. Ensures accurate patient and specimen identification in all required documentation and labeling. Accurately enters laboratory test requests into required computer information systems, faxing laboratory reports as needed, and answering telephone and directing calls as appropriate.

Responsibilities

Collects blood specimens from patients by venipuncture and skin puncture according to physician's orders and established procedures to ensure complete and accurate specimens for testing. Accurately verifies patient identification using a minimum of 2 identifiers. Using age appropriate communication, explains collection procedures and provides general testing information as needed to facilitate patient's understanding and reduce patient anxiety. Reviews physician's written orders and places orders in HIS or LIS. Consults with laboratory staff and/ or physicians regarding unusual or unclear test orders. Demonstrates competency with all applicable computer systems and their functions. Assists with the teaching of venipuncture and capillary techniques to students and new personnel. Properly labels and dates all specimens at bedside/chairside following current established laboratory guidelines for both handwritten and bar-coded labels. Properly places and positions barcode labels on collection tube. Responsible for timely collection, accurate processing and timely delivery of specimens to the testing area, outside reference lab, and/or courier. Accurately performs EKG and Therapeutic Phlebotomy procedures as per physician order. Assures department efficiency by ordering, stocking and properly utilizing all supplies needed. Unpacks, dates, and properly stores all supplies in designated areas. Interacts with patients and their families in a courteous, professional and tactful manner. Directs patients to various ancillary departments as needed. Meets all required competencies for department, unit and/or hospital. Responsible for performing all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Work requires a High School diploma or equivalent. Certificate of Completion of an EKG course is required. Additional Certification of completion of a phlebotomy training program is preferred.
