 Job Overview

 

Under general supervision and according to established procedure specific to age and upon order of a physician provides respiratory care designed to stabilize, prevent or remedy patient respiratory problems. In doing so, arranges and operates a variety of oxygen and other therapeutic gas equipment in order to safely administer prescribed doses of medical gases and aerosolized drugs to patients. Checks equipment regularly for proper functioning and records data obtained during therapy and diagnostic testing in patient charts. Draws, analyzes, and reports ABGs to physicians and nurses. Involved with adult ventilator weaning protocol and MDI protocol. Participates in embracing excellence and relationship based care.

Responsibilities

Verifies and interprets physician orders to determine requirements, medication and dosages ordered and possible interactions. Recommends MDI/ DPI as alternatives medications and following MDI protocol. Serves as a clinical consultant and attends patient rounds with the Medical and Nursing staff. Oxygen therapy and precautions to be observed, and alters procedures as necessary to provide respiratory therapy in accordance with physician orders. Knowledgeable to operate Pyxis, maintain draw with accurate medication count, and the respiratory patient specific draw to store with the proper patient's MDIs. Responsible for proper documentation, complete patient assessment on all patients, and to complete treatment/ equipment charges. Responsible for documentation of eMAR. Writes legibly on respiratory notes. Responsible for preventing missed treatments/therapy and logging missed treatments in the missed log book. Explains and educates all treatment procedures to patient and/or family members to ally fears, elicit cooperation, and ensure proper technique of therapy. Follows protocol for infection control policy in all respiratory equipment and machines. Utilizes equipment in adhering to departmental safety procedures by placing and fitting face mask, annuals, arranging tent or hood securing endotracheal, tracheotomy tubes in position and so forth according to procedure performed. Attends to CPR's and RRT's. Performs external or internal patient transports. Performs diagnostic test and procedures. Reviews patients charts for past medical history and current diagnosis, in order to give proper report. Follows all ABG department policies, responsible for all ventilator setting changes, and oxygen therapy as per MD�s order. Reports to MD, RN of an ABG result of considered panic values within required time, and enters data to lab system completely avoiding pending logs. Assist in intubation and initiates, set up and monitors patients on continuous ventilation including maintenance of airway patency, suctioning, and ensuring ventilators/NIVmachines are functioning properly. Check ventilator alarms int./ ext. Performs respiratory weaning protocols/ extubation and non invasive ventilations all in accordance to Respiratory policy. Entering intubations/extubations in the log book in all labs. Makes regular rounds of assigned patients to ensure physicians' orders are being followed and patient is monitored. Maintain a good shift report to incoming Respiratory therapist. Make sure equipment is in good working condition, properly regulated. Complete patient charges, enters all respiratory orders, and or cancel orders as needed. Assists/coordinates in the orientation of new employees and training respiratory therapy students. Adheres to all departmental policies and in reporting Emergency situation; Chain of Command. Participates in Emergency triage disaster Planning. Maintains knowledge of current trends and techniques in the field by reading appropriate journals, books and other advance literatures. Frequently access the Respiratory Therapy IntraNet websites to be aware of new memos, policies, in-services, and educational information. . Attends and participates in departmental in-service and staff meetings. Meets all required competencies for department, unit and/or hospital. Responsible for performing all other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Work requires a Graduate of an approved A.M.A. school for Respiratory Therapy. Must be Certified Respiratory Therapist and have a Licensed as a Respiratory Therapist by the New Jersey State Board of Respiratory Care. Registration required as a Respiratory Therapist. Work requires the analytical ability to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles. Must be able to explain clinical, technical and diagnostic procedures to patients and their families, comforting patients and their families, enforcing policies and regulations in difficult situations, or performing other duties requiring a comparable level of communication skill. Work requires providing direct patient care to neonate, pediatric, adolescent, young adult, adult and geriatric patient
