 Job Overview


Under the immediate supervision of a Registered Nurse, provides general nursing care and coordinates patient care for a group of patients. Cares for infants through geriatric age groups. After evaluation of competency, the Nurse Extern is allowed to perform all the duties of a PCA as well as other technical duties, which have been learned in a nursing education program for which competency has been validated by a preceptor.


Demonstrates knowledge based on nursing theory, scientific principles and the biopsychosocial being. Performs psychomotor skills necessary to provide patient care for what he/she has demonstrated competency in including the following: A. Phlebotomy procedures and blood glucose monitoring. B. Perform direct patient care responsibilities/assisting patient with ADLs. C. Perform vital signs, specimen collection, heat & cold application, preps. D. Perform psychomotor skills associated with select technical procedures including IV therapy maintenance, central line care, wound care, suctioning, enteral feedings, under the direction of the RN. E. Perform basic observations of patient's physical, emotional and spiritual needs. F. Perform select unit associate activities through "managing the desk", transcription of physician orders, chart review and other unit activities G. Perform rounds with preceptor/mentor to observe and contribute to patient assessments. H. Document select aspects of care in the medical record. Differentiates between the roles of the various disciplines as they relate to contributing to effective patient outcomes and meeting the patient's continuum of care needs. A. Participates in various observational experiences as assigned. B. Reinforce patient education. Differentiates and collaborates between the roles of the various members of the nursing staff including Clinical Specialist, Case Manager, Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Technician, Patient Care Associate and Unit Associate. Reports patient/physician concerns, changes in patient status, dangerous situations and patient safety issues immediately to preceptor/mentor. Fosters principles of patient advocacy and positive guests relations. Safeguards patient's rights to privacy and confidentiality. Assumes responsibility for gauging individual progress and documenting on appropriate forms. The Extern SHALL NOT administer any medication or controlled substances (oral, IV, IM, rectal or subcutaneous). The Extern SHALL NOT initiate any blood or blood products. The Extern SHALL NOT take verbal or telephone orders from physicians or advance practice nurses. The Extern SHALL NOT assume the role of the primary nurse in giving patient care. Meets all required competencies for department, unit and/or hospital. Responsible for performing all other duties as assigned.
