Works under indirect supervision of the Resource Technician performing daily activities of the Sterile Processing Department, which include all aspects of the decontamination, assembly of sets, sterilization processes, and specialty cart restocking (CPR carts, Disaster Carts, Case Carts and Specialty carts). Ensures functions are performed with conscious regard to the procedures while interacting professionally with other departments within the system. The CSPDT must have knowledge of: surgical instrumentation in regards to identification, cleaning, inspecting, testing, packaging and sterilization, operation of mechanical equipment for instrument cleaning and sterilization, infection control practices and preventative measures and regulatory agencies the govern sterile processing practices.
Is knowledgeable of Infection Control principles and practices requiring appropriate use traffic flow, and aseptic techniques. Is knowledgeable of all sterilization methods, cycles, loading and unloading, cycle changes, cautions and codes. Correctly uses quality assurance sterilization tools such as PCD's, dynamic air removal tests, indicators and integrators. Handles implantable appropriately according to manufacturers instructions utilizing PCD devices and integrators, and documents results. Releases devices following PCD results or appropriate documentation. Follows manufacturer's recommendations for care, handling , cleaning and sterilization of reusable instrumentation and items being processed. Locates, reads and follows manufacturer's recommendations for care, handling , cleaning and sterilization of reusable instrumentation and items being processed. Follows and documents specific procedures for assembly, restocking and distribution of specialty carts such as CPR cart, disaster carts, special procedure carts, and case carts. Appropriately handles loaner instrumentation sets according to facility protocol and/or manufacturers recommendations. Records incoming trays and identifies surgeries where trays are needed. Follows protocol through release back to lender. Understands the procedure for identifying the need for and initiating the repair process of instrumentation, processing equipment and patient care equipment. Meets all required competencies for department, unit and/or hospital. Responsible for performing all other duties as assigned. Special Projects
Work requires a High School diploma or equivalent and one to two years of previous work related experience. Certification required from a NJDOH recognized certification body such as CBSPD/ IAHCSMM. Completion and passing grade in an SPD training course or school is acceptable in lieu of one to two years job experience. In areas where ETO is used, must become and maintain licensure as a NJ Certified Pesticide Applicator or Operator. Work requires math skill such as addition, subtraction, division, multiplication.
