Under general supervision and according to established procedures, provides basic medical assistance to physicians/providers and nurses by providing basic preparation of patients according to area specific Policy and Procedures including but not limited to vital signs, chart preparation, phlebotomy, procedure assistance and lab sample collection. Utilizes department specific computer systems for entry and retrieval of patient data
Prepares the patient for exam, taking accurate vital signs interviewing patient for area specific information, provides appropriate garments and equipment. Enters and retrieves patient data into and from area specific computer systems, including but not limited to lab and diagnostic reports as needed, ensuring that charts are up to date for visit. Conducts tests i.e. EKGs, Vision, Hearing, etc., and/or administers medications with optimal technical skill, documenting accurately according to area requirements. Administers intramuscular or subcutaneous injections under the limited circumstances set forth by the American Association of Medical Assistants. Performs phlebotomy, including venipuncture and capillary puncture on patients with accuracy, collects the correct specimen, labels correctly, enters information into correct system and forwards to the appropriate lab. Answers telephone, takes accurate messages for doctor/staff. Documents using area specific policy & procedure. Takes pharmacy calls sends renewal request to the Doctor for approval. Follows up on patient concerns or treatments per Doctor request Completes patient referrals, schedules appointments in computer system according to specific area and ensuring that the patient has appropriate appointment documented. Enters orders into appropriate computer systems. Reviews incoming tests and routes to physician for review. Contact patient with new treatment regimens, and or follow up appointment per Doctor Request. Assumes responsibility and accountability for maintaining continuing education and certifications Stocks and cleans exam rooms and equipment between patients, and at start and end of day, adhering to infection control policies. Assists in ordering of supplies and medications as needed. Meets all required competencies for department, unit and/or hospital. Responsible for performing all other duties as assigned. Work requires a High School diploma or equivalent and less than one year of previous work related experience. Graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program. Must have and maintain current certification or registration from an accredited institution, e.g.: AAMA, NHA, AMT. Bilingual preferred.
