Responsible for the physiological support of patients requiring the heart - lung machine during surgery. This includes assuming the functions of the heart and lungs, brain protection and adjusting to minute to minute metabolic changes. Provide hemodynamic support through the use of the intra-aortic balloon pump and other technology.
Analyzes patients medical, lab work, EKG & cath reports to choose appropriate equipment and anticipates strategies for the conduct of cardiopulmonary bypass. Maintains a complete and accurate record of cardiopulmonary bypass. Reviews with surgical team varying approaches to safe cardiopulmonary bypass for the patient. Includes, selection of proper size cannulas, use of high or low K+ Cardioplegia, use of Hemoconcentrator. Assembles & quality testing daily of circuit used to place patient on CPB. Includes selection of equipment, calibration of pumps & pressure monitors, assembly of ancillary equip., completion of pre-CPB checklist. Reviews conduct of CPB. Assumes all function of the heart & lungs while the heart is being operated on. Maintaining adjusting cardiac output, blood pressure, hematocrit, oxygenation, acid-based balance. Performs and interprets lab tests, performs activated clotting test, interpret results of electrolyte analysis hematocrit, arterial and venous blood gas. Ensures treatment of patient based on data obtained through analysis of lab work. In conjunction w/ MD's includes administration of Heparin, Potassium, Vasoactive drugs, blood products, sodium bicarbonate oxygen. Maintain Complete accurate record of cardiopulmonary bypass and is a permanent part of patients medical record. Responsible, when on call to be available 24 hours/day for CPB, Intra-aortic balloon insertion/troubleshooting cardiac cath lab support [using percutaneous [CPB]. Meets all required competencies for department, unit and/or hospital. Responsible for performing all other duties as assigned. Special Projects
Work requires the knowledge of theories, principles, & concepts normally acquire through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Bio-Medical or closely related field and two to three years of previous work related experience. Certification required as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ACP) and Perfusionist Licensure by NJ State. Requires analytical ability to collect information from diverse sources, apply professional principles in performing various analyses, and summarize the information and data in order to solve problems and design relatively complex systems and programs.
